Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage or Champissage, has its roots in the ancient Ayurvedic healing system.  It has been practiced in India for over a thousand years, and the techniques have been handed down by successive generations of women usually as part of a hair and scalp conditioning treatment.  It was introduced to this country as a therapy in its own right by Narendra Mehta in the 1980s.

Indian Head Massage works on both a physical and a mental level, supporting the nervous system by alleviating stress.  By concentrating on major muscle group areas where stress and tension is most often felt (ie. shoulders and neck), the whole body can be de-stressed.  Therapeutic touch has the power to affect us on many levels and many people are starved of physical contact these days.

The shoulders and neck area are given particular attention in Indian Head Massage.  These parts of the body connect the mind to the torso.  We often carry the weight of the world on our shoulders.  Attitudes to responsibilities, work and unacknowledged emotions can all be reflected here.  Muscles tighten with stress and the free movement of the head and neck is impeded.  Relieving the tension in these key areas, energy trapped in muscles and cells is released encouraging the flow of blood and lymph which re-energises the entire body.

Indian Head Massage utilises a variety of stimulating and tension-releasing techniques which assist some specific body systems directly and affects all body systems indirectly.  For example, stimulation of the lymphatic system encourages the elimination of toxins, cleansing and purifying the body more efficiently.  The circulatory and immune systems are also stimulated.  When the mind and body relax, our breathing automatically deepens, bringing fresh energy to the respiratory system.  This also indirectly relaxes the digestive system as the action of breathing massages the viscera.

An experienced practitioner is also able to promote the release of more subtle energy which can also be restricted by physical tension.  These energies can be linked to the Chinese Meridian system and also the Chakras.  Rebalancing energies can calm tense or troubled emotions, making us feel nurtured and cared for.  It can also assist in helping enable us to find a sense of peace within the mind, a space where solutions and strategies for our problems are able to emerge.

Whatever the energetic reach of the practitioner, a good Indian Head Massage can leave you feeling refreshed, relaxed and re-energised.
