Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy is based on findings by osteopaths in America about 100 years ago.  While studying the body’s subtle physiology, they found that every cell in a healthy body expresses a rhythmic movement, which is fundamental to life.  Every structure in the body – bones, organs, muscles etc. follows its own particular pattern of movement.  At the core, the most profound movement is in the cerebrospinal fluid, which bathes and cushions the brain and spinal cord.  This movement, which was termed craniosacral motion is expressed in a tide-like ebb and flow and is so subtle that it is barely measurable with instruments, although the hands of a trained therapist are able to perceive it.  Over the years Craniosacral Therapy has gradually developed and refined into the subtle, deep, healing process which available today.

In response to stress, illness and injury, the tissues contract and if the trauma is severe they may stay contracted, restricting the body’s functioning and leading to chronic physical conditions such as back pain, migraines, digestive disorders and emotional issues such a anxiety and depression.  This will show up in the way the craniosacral motion is expressed.  Therapists can use irregularities in this motion to indentify areas where there is congestion and the possible origin of a problem.  The body is encouraged at an unconscious level to let go of the restrictive pattern.  As an additional benefit Craniosacral Therapy might lead to an increased level of energy, as freedom from holding the contraction is achieved.

What happens in a session:
In a typical craniosacral session, you will usually lie (or sometimes sit) fully-clothed on a treatment couch. The therapist will make contact by placing their hands lightly on your body and tuning in.

The first thing you will probably notice is a sense of deep relaxation, which will generally last throughout the session. This release of tension often extends into everyday life. Sometimes the benefits are not immediately noticeable but become obvious on returning to a familiar environment.

Nicola Redmond
Nicola trained with Jonathan Lawrence, a Cranial Osteopath with his own busy practice in North Devon and Bath.  Jonathan trained and lectured at the European School of Osteopathy (where craniosacral techniques are integral to the teaching, unique among osteopathic colleges) and subsequently taught osteopathic, soft tissue and cranial techniques in the UK and abroad to a variety of practitioners including massage therapists, osteopaths, midwives and doctors. Nicola assists John in his teaching and occasionally works with him  in his  central London practice.  She has also learned Homeopathic Mesotherapy from Jonathan and has assisted in his teaching of this to other Homeopaths.  This can be very effective in pain relief, alongside Craniosacral Therapy.

This video may be a little technical but it illustrates how craniosacral therapy works.
