Therapies: Toyohari
What is Toyohari?
Toyohari -East Asian Needle Therapy is a Japanese style of traditional acupuncture which uses specialised needle techniques - notably “contact needling”, where a silver needle is held over the skin without piercing it - this method is totally painless and is used not just for those who are wary of needles, but for most conditions.
Toyohari practitioners use traditional Oriental medicine principles, to assess the underlying imbalance of each individual. Treatment focuses on restoring balance and improving natural healing ability, in order to strengthen the whole body. Toyohari has developed a wide variety of gentle, non-invasive techniques that provide effective relief of symptoms and these are selected according to each patient’s needs.
The therapeutic methods which emphasise touch, were developed in Japan where acupuncture has been uniquely influenced by the four hundred year old tradition of blind acupuncture practitioners. It is largely based on the practitioner’s ability to feel and work with qi (energy), which flows throughout a person’s body and in particular along twelve main channels or meridians.
The Toyohari Association in Japan ensures that Toyohari acupuncture is a living tradition where diagnostic and treatment techniques are continuously being re-examined and evaluated in the context of the twenty-first century and its rapidly changing life-style.
What happens in a Toyohari treatment?
Treatment is a very relaxing experience. Toyohari diagnosis involves taking the details of your case, including your past and present medical history. Once on the treatment table, the practitioner will gently palpate the meridians and your abdomen and feel the pulse at the wrist. Points on the surface of the skin are carefully selected and gentle, painless techniques are used to restore balance. You may experience a sensation of warmth and tingling as the points are stimulated. Often people feel a sense of calm and well-being during the treatment itself and immediately afterwards. Moxibustion (warming herbs) and Sotai exercises for structural alignment may be used, to enhance symptom relief. Toyohari methods are non-invasive, safe and suitable for anyone including children, during pregnancy and the elderly.
How often will you need treatment?
Treatment is usually weekly to begin with, often a course of 6 weekly treatments is recommended. As your condition improves, the sessions are spaced out. Some patients come monthly or once every 6-8 weeks for health maintenance.
