Therapies: Shiatsu

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is an ancient form of oriental medicine dating back 5000 years to the beginning of acupuncture. It is a holistic Japanese healing art which translated literally means ‘finger pressure’.

In Shiatsu the practitioner connects with the meridian system of the body. He may use a range of techniques from gentle holding and pressing using: fingers, palms, elbows, knees and feet, to the more dynamic stretching and rotation of limbs and joints of the body.

Qi or Ki is the vital energy or life force of the body. It flows in a network of meridians or channels throughout the body. These connect to the vital organs. Where there is a lack of flow this may manifest as a back problem, a headache, a mental depression or in a variety of different ways.

By working with the channels the practitioner summons energy to the areas lacking flow and disperses energy where it has become congested.

Shiatsu is primarily a preventative medicine, which helps maintain health and wellbeing. It strengthens vital organs and helps prevent energy in the body becoming blocked.

What happens in a Shiatsu session?

Shiatsu takes place with the client fully dressed, but preferably wearing loose fitting clothes of natural fibre to allow for movement.

A session usually begins with an initial talk. A medical case history may be taken if relevant. A range of diagnostic tools may be used from palpation of the back and or the abdomen (Hara) to observation of the breath and posture.

The session usually takes place on a futon but can be on a treatment couch or stool, depending on mobility. It lasts for approximately one hour.

At the end of the session the practitioner may suggest and demonstrate some simple exercises or Qigong to supplement and integrate the work.

What are the Benefits of Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a process of reconnecting your mind and body with the deep healing energy that supports your immune system.

As the flow of your energy gradually improves so there is a greater sense of ease in the body.
