Therapies: Craniosacral

Craniosacral therapy

Developed in the 1970s by Cranial Osteopath Dr. John Upledger, Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle & profound form of natural medicine, founded on the belief that the body can heal itself, approached with sensitivity, patience & humility.

Whilst most forms of physical therapy begin by softening tensions at the surface & then progress to addressing deeper issues, Craniosacral Therapy is focused on melting restrictions at the core. Working with a very light touch, primarily on the head & spine, the Craniosacral Therapist is able to tune in to the body’s inherent vitality; to connect with the health that is always present but often buried beneath layers of tension & restriction.

The combination of gentle touch & depth of focus makes Craniosacral treatment appropriate for a wide range of conditions & for people of all ages, offering support through pregnancy & birth to old age. Treatment is also offered for cats, dogs & horses.

Treatment is initially focused on bringing the nervous system to a state of rest. Restrictions can then be accessed & released, distress dissolving away as wholeness & vitality returns. Clients often experience sensations of energetic release; a sense of floating & weightlessness; feelings of deep peacefulness & wellbeing.

A session lasts between 60 & 90 minutes with the client lying on a comfortable therapy couch (or sitting if lying is difficult). Sessions may be entirely meditative or may involve verbal, analytical & emotional work, promoting deep therapeutic integration. It is this scope for integration that leads many people to Craniosacral Therapy, not only as a tool for treating ailments but as a vehicle for personal, interpersonal & spiritual growth.

Craniosacral Therapy has helped people suffering from a wide range of conditions including;

arthritis, asthma, autism, back & neck pain, birth trauma, bronchitis, cerebral palsy, colic, depression, digestive problems, drug withdrawal. dyslexia. exhaustion/insomnia/, lethargy,
