Therapies: Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbal medicine, like acupuncture, is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a profound and highly sophisticated medical system that dates back 3,000 years.

The aim of Chinese Medicine is to treat the underlying disharmony that lies at the root of disease. It derives its principles from the observation of nature and the cycle of the seasons, and is based on the Taoist concepts of Yin and Yang, two opposing qualities that are interdependent and in a constant state of dynamic balance.

Each organ has a Yin and a Yang aspect. It is when the balance of Yin and Yang becomes undermined that disease may occur.

Diagnosis is based on the pattern of presenting symptoms, examination of the tongue and a subtle and highly skilled art of pulse-taking. A full medical history will be taken at the first consultation. The practitioner is then able to make a very precise diagnosis, and subsequently devise a herbal formula which is individually tailored according to the precise needs of the patient.

The herbal prescription may be administered in the form of capsules, concentrated powder, pills or teas. Treatment will need to be reviewed at intervals and adjusted as appropriate. Follow-up consultations will usually take place every 2-4 weeks.

Chinese herbal medicine is often used in conjunction with acupuncture, or it may be used alone. Herbs are particularly important in treating chronic disorders, and conditions where there is an element of deficiency. Some of the conditions that can be treated include digestive disorders such as IBS; gynaecological disorders, such as endometriosis, painful periods, PCOS and infertility; skin problems, including eczema, psoriasis and acne; respiratory disorders such as asthma and hayfever; and many others.
