Wendy Smith BSc (Hons), BANT
Nutritional Therapist
Wendy Smith qualified as a nutritional therapist in 2001. She trained for one year at the Institute of Optimum Nutrition in Putney, and thereafter gained an honours degree in Health Sciences: Nutritional Therapy from the University of Westminster. She is fully insured and a member of the British Association of Nutritional Therapy (BANT).
Wendy is passionate about food - cooking, growing (eating!) – but, especially, about the way in which food and environment affect our health. She is an associate member of the British Society of Ecological Medicine and a keen supporter of various food-campaigning bodies such as the Soil Association, the Food Ethics Council, and the Food Commission. Wendy believes that many of the clients she sees are malnourished due largely to the way food is grown and processed today. "Their symptoms and illnesses are a manifestation of chronic nutrient deficiency caused by 21st century living. I see an increasing number of people with allergies and food intolerance, chemical sensitivities, chronic fatigue, adrenal stress and fertility problems – just a few of the problems influenced by diet and environment."
In addition to her clinical practice, Wendy works as Senior Nutritional Advisor for Age Concern Greenwich, in a lottery-funded healthy living scheme. This is a holistic project promoting healthy lifestyles and seeks to address health inequalities in the local community. The project has recently secured funding for an initiative that will deliver a combination of Tai Chi, nutrition and acupuncture for older people, and will also involve therapists from the Blackheath clinic. Wendy also runs workshops and talks for various groups and companies, and is a visiting lecturer in nutrition and stress, agriculture and nutrition, at the University of Greenwich. She regularly attends lectures, seminars and training courses around the country to further her knowledge and keep abreast of the latest research.
