Child and Adolescent Counselling

Are you worried about your child?

Children face many pressures in our modern society. Most do fine but some find it difficult to cope or do not get the support they need to feel safe, happy and confident. If your child is feeling distressed or troubled, they may express their unhappiness in a number of ways:

  • unable to concentrate
  • behaving out of character – irritable, sad, depressed, loss of interest/enjoyment
  • not sleeping, having nightmares, wetting the bed
  • becoming disruptive in class
  • getting fussy about food, or cleanliness, or developing eating problems
  • trying to harm themselves
  • having trouble making friends, or finding relationships at home difficult
  • becoming fearful and resentful
  • getting into fights and becoming aggressive
  • increasing alcohol/drug use.

What is Psychotherapeutic Counselling?

Psychotherapeutic counselling offers the possibility of exploring our current life problems with another in a supportive, confidential environment. Through dialogue and creative work it becomes possible to see how our life may be affected by issues outside our awareness. Change occurs as we become more self-aware and are able to let go of unconscious habits, patterns and destructive coping mechanisms. Over time, this process may lead to feelings of increased vitality, a richer experience of life and fuller, more satisfying relationships with oneself, others and the world.
Psychotherapeutic counselling offers the opportunity to explore the meaning of our life and discover hidden aspects of ourselves. Indeed, it can become a way of unearthing and discovering our potential and developing future possibilities.

My approach is creative – in addition to the traditional core practice of ‘talking therapy’, there is the opportunity to work with dreams, art and body awareness and integration in which I have training and experience. This integration encourages a supportive and sometimes challenging exploration of the wholeness of our lived experience – body, mind and spirit, both conscious and unconscious.

My approach is flexible and creative with the aim of meeting the uniqueness of every individual.

The Arts in Therapy

Often words alone are powerful and expressive. Sometimes they are limiting and do not sufficiently convey an experience.

The Arts offer an alternative and powerful means of expression. Symbols and images reveal all aspects of ourselves – the body, mind and emotions. They allow us to circumvent thinking which often consists of negative beliefs that have formed us but in fact work against us.

The therapeutic application of The Arts facilitates and deepens the process of awareness and healing.

Art Therapy offers sandtray, drawing and painting media, enactment and role play, dreamwork and bodywork. Feelings can become numbed and locked in the body, which holds on to the memories. Attending to your body and its needs enables feelings of being  grounded, present and alive.

Artistic experience is not expected or required. Most important is meeting your individual needs for personal growth.

How many sessions will be needed?

Sessions are booked on a weekly basis. The amount will vary according to the individual, and we can discuss this when we meet. Counselling can be short term or long term, depending on the needs of the young person. We will regularly review the work together. I recommend that all clients have a minimum of 8 sessions.

How will I know if therapy is helping?

Each individual experiences counselling in a unique way. As a general guide you know counselling is helping if you find yourself feeling more self-confident, you begin to have healthier relationships, you feel unburdened and you can see things more clearly and you find new ways of coping with habits that you want to break.
