Mindfulness for Health course – Weekly Fridays

Mindfulness for Health

This course provides tools to manage physical or emotional pain through mindfulness practice. It is open to all but is particularly useful for those suffering from short or long-term physical health conditions, chronic illness and related stress.

It is based on the Mindfulness Based Pain Management (MBPM) developed by Breathworks founder Vidyamala Burch to help her cope with severe pain and health complications following two major spinal injuries. Breathworks is one of the leading mindfulness organisations worldwide, operating in 35 countries.

The course has been backed by huge amounts of research and has changed the lives of thousands of people. It has benefited those with back pain, diabetes, insomnia, chronic fatigue, migraines, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, stroke, tinnitus, cancer and a host of other conditions.

The underlying principle of MBPM is that we are already whole and that by practising mindfulness and compassion we can rediscover our wholeness.

Most people completing an eight-week Breathworks course report lasting benefits including a greater capacity to manage their health symptoms through pacing and experience increased calm, confidence, energy, enthusiasm and appreciation of life.

Through guided meditation, group discussion, experiential activities and supported home practice you will be introduced to a number of simple yet powerful mindfulness practices by Breathworks certified teacher, Tammy Driver.

Course content includes:

  • The skill of meditation and how to practise
  • How mindfulness is very much central to helping you manage, live well with, and in many situations, move on from pain and chronic health conditions
  • How to dwell in the present moment (as opposed to being preoccupied with the past or future) and breathe into your painful/difficult experience (as opposed to resisting which leads to tensing against it and further levels of pain)
  • Breath Awareness and its power to transform and dissolve tension and pain
  • The role of the breath in reconnecting mind and body (usually very much disconnected in chronic pain sufferers)
  • Complementary mindful movement practices promoting further mind-body awareness
  • The role of compassion and acceptance in managing chronic pain and health conditions
  • How to increase appreciation of the simple pleasures in life
  • Mindfulness skills to apply to your daily life
  • Pacing your activities in everyday life and learning how to recognise and break the ‘boom and bust’ cycle
  • Improved concentration and the ability to stay focused on one task at once

The course includes the following:

  • Eight weeks of lessons – more than 20 hours of class time
  • Access to a Facebook group where you can ask questions throughout the course and connect with other participants
  • Course workbook
  • Access to audio meditation recordings for home practice

Courses are taught in small groups and cost £160 for the eight-week programme. The course runs weekly on Fridays 11am-1.30pm.
